Air Hygiene
Air Hygiene is part of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992. This requires that mechanical ventilation systems used for providing ventilation are maintained and cleaned as appropriate. You are also required to ensure that the ventilation in any enclosed workspace is effective and provides a sufficient quantity of fresh or purified air, the guidance states that this fresh air supply rate should not fall below 5 to 8 litres per second, per occupant.
For new ductwork installations Guide to Good Practice and Specification for Sheet Metal Ductwork state that where specific cleanliness levels are required (for instance in Hospitals) or where sheet metal is used then the ductwork should be cleaned prior to commissioning.

Disinfection is applied by the means of a fine biocide mist or fog into the supply system immediately after the cleaning works are complete. The formulation of this biocide is reviewed and changed bi-annually to prevent acquired immunity building up within the system.
